70 Season Two

We’re back after our break, this show was mostly a run-through to make sure the equipment was still configured correctly and to ease everyone from the hosts to the listeners back into the show. There was a technical difficultly (I labeled Wayne’s channel wrong and the first 20 min was essentially me having a one sided conversation as far as the recording was concerened.) We trimmed the problem part and left the good parts in.

What made it into the recording was discussion on the 2011 - 2012 Chevrolet Volt, the 2012 Toyota Prius C, and the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco.

Our hosts this week are Wayne Gerdes and Kacey Green.

Welcome back to the GoHypermiling Podcast, you have just gone Hypermiling!

Our Technique: Barefoot Driving & Sock Driving

Ditch the socks & shoes for better Fuel Economy?  The foot has great flexibility and fine motor-control and feedback so you can get free percentage points added to your fuel economy by not wearing restrictive footwear. … Legal in 50 states! (old wives tales to the contrary)

40 MPG Non-Hybrid compact cars readied

Wayne tells us about vehicles such as the 2012 Hyundai Elantra, 2012 Ford Focus that obtain great fuel economy without hybrid technology or alternative fuels.
The Elantra even matches Ford’s smaller sub-compact Fiesta, a tough feat to pull off. …

Performance at the pump goes extreme

The 2011 Ford Mustang pulls 48.5 MPG for 1,457  laps at Bristol Motor Speedway, Bristol, TN.  This car is powered by a 305 HP V6 engine!  Manufacturers are putting much stronger emphasis on fuel economy during vehicle development lately, lets hope this trend continues. …

“1776” mile Chevy Volt Freedom Drive

“This drive is a demonstration of the freedom the Volt will provide customers – freedom to drive where you want, when you want,” said Tony DiSalle, director of product marketing for Chevrolet Volt. “Whether you are driving 50 miles or 1,750 miles, the Volt is the only electric vehicle that can be a family’s primary car.”

Over the course of the four days, the Volt Freedom Drive began in Austin, with stops in Little Rock, AR; Nashville, TN and Roanoke, VA on Day 1, Washington, D.C. and Frederick, MD on day 2; Philadelphia, PA on Day 3 and finally arrived in NY City on July 4th to complete the drive… Of course CleanMPG tweeted that if they need it driven back, we could put together an ad hoc team overnight. No response was forthcoming to that proposal…

 Modes of the Volt Revealed

Larry Nitz, General Motors electric and hybrid powertrain engineering executive director, provided an update on the Chevrolet Volt, during a development drive on the West Coast.

During the update, Nitz discussed the Volt’s three driving modes - Normal, Sport and Mountain - as well as its two climatic modes - Eco and Comfort. He also addressed the teams’ assessment of the three T’s that most impact range and fuel efficiency - technique, terrain and temperature.

Toyota Prius and Lexus hybrid surprising buyers after recall

Toyota’s dominance with the Prius transcends more than just it’s competition. Toyota’s Lexus division expected to sell 20,000 - 22,000 Lexus HS 250h’s, but has only been able to sell 11,228 of the luxury hybrid sedan, putting the vehicle well below expectations.  Toyota had high hopes for the upscale car, but with just about 1,000-1,500 units sold per month, Toyota will end up about a few thousand under the mark.

The Prius on the other hand continues to dominate and grow, despite the highly publicized recalls. In April of 2010, Toyota sold 12,555 Prius hybrids which is a growth of 49.7% from last year’s April figures and the year-to-date total sales figures are collectively up 26.1%.

EU rules may mean silent electric cars must make Star Wars noises

Testing of various sounds begins this month at Warwick University, which is working with several electric-vehicle manufacturers in the West Midlands.

A test vehicle will project a different sound each week and assess the response of pedestrians.

Paul Jennings said: “We will have a week with music and weeks with natural sounds, engine noise and also with science-fiction sounds.
