#60 Bump-Start

We discussed Febuary sales, autombile quality & logevity. Fuel prices through the ages, and quite a few of our usual tangents.

Manuel walked us through warming up our vehicles for the technique, as it is colder in Manatoba than Chicago.

If anyone actually reads these shownotes/descriptions, please send me a txt or use the leave a message feature on the site thanks.

 Modes of the Volt Revealed

Larry Nitz, General Motors electric and hybrid powertrain engineering executive director, provided an update on the Chevrolet Volt, during a development drive on the West Coast.

During the update, Nitz discussed the Volt’s three driving modes - Normal, Sport and Mountain - as well as its two climatic modes - Eco and Comfort. He also addressed the teams’ assessment of the three T’s that most impact range and fuel efficiency - technique, terrain and temperature.

Toyota Prius and Lexus hybrid surprising buyers after recall

Toyota’s dominance with the Prius transcends more than just it’s competition. Toyota’s Lexus division expected to sell 20,000 - 22,000 Lexus HS 250h’s, but has only been able to sell 11,228 of the luxury hybrid sedan, putting the vehicle well below expectations.  Toyota had high hopes for the upscale car, but with just about 1,000-1,500 units sold per month, Toyota will end up about a few thousand under the mark.

The Prius on the other hand continues to dominate and grow, despite the highly publicized recalls. In April of 2010, Toyota sold 12,555 Prius hybrids which is a growth of 49.7% from last year’s April figures and the year-to-date total sales figures are collectively up 26.1%.

EU rules may mean silent electric cars must make Star Wars noises

Testing of various sounds begins this month at Warwick University, which is working with several electric-vehicle manufacturers in the West Midlands.

A test vehicle will project a different sound each week and assess the response of pedestrians.

Paul Jennings said: “We will have a week with music and weeks with natural sounds, engine noise and also with science-fiction sounds.

Our Technique segment is Winterizing your car and your driving style

As with most things in life Kacey, a bit of upfront diligence and preparation can do wonders later on.  And on this note, nothing is more true than preparing your vehicle for the challenges of our northern winters.  We’ll start with the perennial favorites:

- Block your front grill. After all, a warmer engine is an efficient and cleaner running engine.

- If possible, invest in an engine block heater and use it diligently.

- Make sure your tires are properly inflated as their pressure will be lower with lowering temperatures.

- Consider a good set of winter tires as safety should never take a back seat to anything else.

- Change your oil and choose the lowest viscosity oil recommended for your vehicle

- Do not warm idle your car as that will not only shorten the life of the emissions control package and related components, but also give you 0 MPG in addition to polluting a whole lot for very little in return.

- Finally, drive carefully and sensibly even if your vehicle has the latest safety systems like stability assist and traction control.

Arizona closes rest stops in an attempt to slow their budget problems.

The rest stop on U.S. 60 near Wickenburg, Ariz., is among 13 the state closed in a cost-saving move. Many people are not happy. But then the state took away their toilets, and residents began to revolt.
“Why don’t they charge a quarter or something?’” said Connie Lucas, who lives in Pine, Ariz., . “There was one rest stop between here and Phoenix, and we really needed it.”
Arizona has the largest budget gap in the country when measured as a percentage of its overall budget, and the state Department of Transportation was $100 million in the red last fall when it decided to close 13 of the state’s 18 highway rest stops.

A young lady looses her life in a car Toyota dealer claims was not at risk for unintended acceleration.

This week’s story concerns yet another fatality attributed to the unintended accelerations issues that has been plaguing  some Toyota vehicles.

As it turns out, Sandra Livingston of Roosevelt, NY, filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking general and punitive damages against Toyota for the death of her daughter Tyrene Livingston. Tyrene’s 2007 Toyota Yaris “suddenly accelerated and crashed” while she was driving on U.S. Route 30 in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Tyrene was wearing her seat belt while she was driving to her teaching internship at a local high school.

As she traveled down the highway, the Yaris suddenly accelerated out of control and Tyrene was unable to stop the vehicle by braking. The Yaris crossed four lanes of the highway at a high rate of speed, went over a curb, crashed through a guardrail, and collided with the trees at the bottom of an embankment, which sadly resulted in Tyrene’s death. She was considered a safe driver with an excellent driving record.

Just four days prior to the fatal accident, Tyrene brought her Yaris to a Toyota dealership and complained of problems with the vehicle, including what she perceived to be issues with braking. The vehicle was inspected and tested, and Tyrene was assured that nothing was wrong. Her car is one of those Toyota’s with mechanical linkages to the throttle as opposed to the newer Drive by wire systems found in other Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

Sad as it is, many believe that this lawsuit may be another case of ambulance chasing.

What do you think?

First for our technique segment, Wayne teaches us about basic setup of our vehicles.

Next, Kacey has a surprise for us in the form of the pre-production CR-Z Concept car. We note the 6MT (6 speed Manual Transmission). We discussed engine sizes and fuel economy potential for the final version of the car. Kacey drops the thought provoking nugget that perhaps this car may have a dual clutched sequential transmission.

Kacey then brings us the news that folks are again trying to “bell the hybrids”; busybodies are again targeting hybrid cars and their owners with the misguided notion that the vehicles are too quiet and they absolutely have to stick their hooks into these cars and trucks.

Manuel tells us about Jack Rickard and his pursuit of building the world’s best battery electric vehicle.

Finally Wayne tells us what’s happening in the world of the Prius 3G. Toyota has finally released details on the Prius I and pricing. I describe their efforts as trying to create an Insight competitor pricewise and failing miserably giving us a fat stripped down car that the typical Prius owner isn’t interested in. We discuss what this car means for fleets, and tinkerers, as well as try and decide if real people will be able to get their hands on this mythical unicorn.
